I've been thinking of ways to get gender neutral Old Western nicknames for girls that you'd usually see on boys, and two of my best ideas so far are a) Orchid nn Kid (like Billy the Kid), which would take a brave parent to use, and b) Jessamine nn Jesse (like Jesse James).
Names in the Old Western category for boys include:
Wyatt Earp
Kit Carson
Wild Bill
Doc Holiday
Ike Clanton
Buffalo Bill Cody
Jesse James
Billy the Kid
For girls, we have Calamity Jane and Belle Starr. From the boy's options just listed, ideas for Western girl's nicknames (with feminine full names) include Holiday nn Holly, Ekaterina or Katrina nn Kit, or Belicia nn Billy.
Rare and unusual baby name meanings, popularity, nicknames, origins and stories! This is where names become identity.

Christmas Baby Names Roundup
December remains rare as a baby name, but parents do sometimes use it --33 times in 2011. It probably helps that Ember, a top 1000 name, can be its nickname. The same can be said of November, but Nova would probably be the go-to nickname for that one.
Season is another word name turned rare baby name, used only 6 times in 2011, but it would make a great alternative to overused Christmas names, while still being appropriate all year long.
Angela is being heard less these days, but also consider Angelia, Ingela, Angelus and Argelia. You might want to avoid Angel for a few reasons.
Rudolpha at first seems to scream "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," but it actually seems very sweet and wholesome. It's also good for parents looking for frilly, feminine names with masculine nicknames: Rudy.
Emmanuelle could make a great alternative for Noelle this time of year, and it has a religious meaning fitting for Christmas.
Natale is much less heard than Natalie, Natalia and Natasha, which all share meanings.
Shepherd is a nice name loosely connected to Christmas, but Shepherdess is a great female spin on the occupation baby name, brought to my attention recently.
Poinsettia is the Christmas plant, and while names like Rose and Lily remain eternally popular, rare plant names never get used.
Cardinal is the poinsettia of the bird world. The Christmas bird, since its bright red stands out dramatically in the snow.
Garland is one part Judy Garland, one part Christmas garland, and one part surname.
Carol hasn't ranked in a while, yet remains very Christmas appropriate. Caroline seems to be more in favor.
Tuquoise and Fairuza may seem like summer stones, but they're December's birth stones.
Evangeline (and Evangelia, Evangelista and Evangela) are the classy and gorgeous girls of the season.
Winter is doing very well and getting more popular than ever, but Snow is picking up attention as a middle name, and North is becoming a little more popular for boys in the first and middle spot.
Eirawen and Gwyneira are not to be missed if the meaning "snow white" is perfect for you.
Aspen is popular for girls, but not for boys.
Nicolai is the rare variant of Nicholas, perfect for honoring none other than St. Nick himself.
Vesper has been in the news lately, but the "evening star/evening prayer" meaning is perfect for this time of year.
Eve, Gioia, and Felicity/Felice/Felicienne/Feliciana are other options.
Also, be sure to check out this list of names that mean "star," and then this list of peaceful names.

The Best Rare Baby Names of 2012
Goodbye, 2012. You've brought the world some amazing baby names, and some amazingly bad baby names. Let's take a look at some rare names that made the headlines this year...
Severine - the name of the latest Bond girl gets more use in France, as well as the name of the actress that plays her - Bérénice Marlohe, but I'm just a tiny bit surprised that hardcore Harry Potter fans didn't show interest in it as an alternative for Severus, as they both mean...
Matilda - for the simple reason that this name is everywhere, but also the new magazine.
Malala - this poor girl was shot by the Taliban for wanting girls to have equal education rights, but unfortunately her name means "grief stricken."
Blake - Lively. Debuted at #815 in 2011 for girls.
Grey - first name, middle name, boys name, girls name, mothers are going nuts for Grey ever since 50 Shades of Grey came out and took over the world. In 2011 Greysen made the top 1000 at #940. Christian has also been seeing some new popularity, for reasons just stated, plus Christian Bale and the "Dark Knight."
Gatsby - the new movie will soon be here, and parents are pondering the name Gatsby.
Sandy - despite the hurricane, Sandy isn't all that bad, for a name. As a nickname for Sandrina or Sandrine (but maybe not Sandra) Sandy could have a revamped future.
Maple - celebrity baby Maple Sylvie was refreshing, and made parents consider more unusual nature names. Snow seems to be all the rage right now for middle names.
Aria/Arya, Sansa, Theon - obsession over Game of Thrones led to name lovers entertaining the idea of these three names. Aria is the only one that won't get immediately connected to the series, and it was also used in Pretty Little Liars, but Theon is also a legit name.
Adele - the world seems to be fascinated by not only Adele, but her name as well - and the name of her newborn. What is the baby's name, anyway? I was more fascinated by Clary, the name of the baby's father's ex. Clary should be getting more attention when the movie version of Mortal Instruments comes out.
Nova - worth a mention, it appeared on the charts in 2011 at #884 and has been the talk of the town. Well, some towns.
Rosalind - the first name of Uma Thurman's newborn, who has a ridiculous amount of middle names. Rosalind is unfortunately very ignored as a first name, sitting quietly at the bottom of the SSA extended list.
Severine - the name of the latest Bond girl gets more use in France, as well as the name of the actress that plays her - Bérénice Marlohe, but I'm just a tiny bit surprised that hardcore Harry Potter fans didn't show interest in it as an alternative for Severus, as they both mean...

Halloween baby names from last year
This will be the second Halloween for A Baby Name Per Day, so I thought I'd revisit 2011's October posts.
Zelda - as in Zelda Spellman, from "Sabrina the Teenage Witch"
My first list of Halloween baby names - for girls I loved Persephone, Beatrix, Hallow, Eve, Drusilla, Rowena, Jacquelyn, Lilith, Stormy, Jetta, Lamia, Felina, Circe, Lilura, Taika, Zillah, Twila, Desdemona, and Branwen... for boys I loved Salem, Casper, Samhain, Roderick, Damon, Blake, Orpheus, Ichabod (nn Ike) and Night...and ohhhh, the unisex list!
Hallow - I thought this was just too cool
Samhain - a great new way to get Sam as a nickname
Falena - not quite sure why I think moths go so well with Halloween, but I do...maybe because they come out at night, and they're kind of mysterious
Casper - needs no introduction
Sabrina - not many known Sabrina's Celtic origins
Bram - for Bram Stoker
Persephone - the goddess abducted by Hades
Opal - October's birth stone

Q Baby Names
I remember reading through lists of Q names in baby name books and online sites, always thinking "there has to be more." Just for example, there are 14 Q girls names and 36 Q boys names on Behind the Name, and 22 Q names for girls on Nameberry. Not too many for girls, and in comparison with all the A names out there, well...
Thanks to White Pages and 100,000 Baby Names by Bruce Lansky, I've found so many more. There are literally hundreds, although not all of them may be the original first form of a name. Take your pick, then research it elsewhere. Here's a small sampling of girls (I'll go with triple the amount shown on Behind the Name).

Rare 1880 baby names for girls
Here's a list I've been working on while sifting through all the names in the SSA extended list. These are all the interesting (rare, unusual, popular, unique, uncommon and beautiful) baby girl's names I thought were noteworthy. Included is the number of how many babies were born in 1880 with that name, up to 10 births per name. Some of these might be surprising to see listed with only 5 or 6 births, considering how popular they are today, some you'll see are starting to become popular now, and some are still just as rare. I've highlighted those that are now in the top 200.

Witchy Baby Girl Names!
Have a little girl due in October? Looking to name a character? Here's my [seemingly endless] list of witchy-sounding baby names, and I love almost every single one. Most of them also fit in the "clunky but cool" category, or "vintage." Keep in mind that most plants, trees, herbs, spices, flowers, gems, space and nature names fit the bill. Also, I've put any actual witch names from legend, myth, literature, movies, etc in bold. I have not considered the names of actual, living people. Feel free to point out anything I missed, and sorry for any repeats.

Once Upon a Time Baby Names
The TV show Once Upon a Time is setting two different trends right now: 1) fashion trends (the main character's jackets are constantly being talked about) and 2) baby names. Fans have been looking forward to season 2, which began yesterday. From this first episode we are introduced to Mulan, Aurora (sleeping beauty), and Sleeping Beauty's Prince Phillip.
A lot of thought went into character names for this show. Emma Swan is the main character, daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming aka James aka David Nolan. Emma is played by Jennifer Morrison, Snow White aka Mary Margaret Blanchard is played by Ginnifer Goodwin, and Charming is played by Josh Dallas. Ms. Swan's story involves a son she gave up for adoption when she was young, and that son had been adopted by the Evil Queen, Regina Mills. Emma's son Henry is played by Jared S. Gilmore, and Regina is played by Lana Parrilla.
Here's a little on the name meanings:
Emma - a royal name in medieval England, "entire, all, universal"
Swan - ...swans are white, carries on the fantasy surname
Mary Margaret - a double name of Biblical Virgin Mary and Saint Margaret to fit her pure character, Mary means "star of the sea" (and alternate meaning is "rebellion") and Margaret means "pearl," (as in "pearl-white")
Blanchard - surname, "white" and "brave, strong"
James - the name of a king, "he who supplants" (in reference to replacing the previous James in the show)
David - the name of a king, "beloved"
Nolan - "champion"
Regina - "queen"
Henry - another royal name, "home ruler"
Other characters:
Mr. Gold aka Rumplestiltskin
Kathryn Nolan, David's wife aka Princess Abigail
Sheriff Graham aka the huntsman
Archie Hopper aka Jiminy Cricket
August Booth aka Pinocchio
Ruby aka Red Riding Hood
Sidney Glass aka the Magic Mirror
Jefferson aka Mad Hatter
Marco aka Geppetto
Ashley Boyd aka Cinderella
Nova, a fairy
and Belle
Also, if anyone knows how to make blog buttons, I'm trying to learn how.
